Apply to the Nursing Program

The nursing program application is available from November 1 through January 31 at 4:30 p.m. CST.

  1. Log-in to MyMotlow
  2. Click Student
  3. Click Scholarship and Program Applications
  4. Click Nursing Application and complete the application. A confirmation email is sent to you after you apply. Please save this confirmation.

Requirements for All ApplicantS

  • Be admitted to the college with all college/high school transcripts received by the Admission’s Office by January 31 deadline.
    • If you have a college degree, you do not have to submit a high school transcript.
  • Submit the Nursing Program application.
    • The Nursing Program application will be available on November 1 and will close at 4:30 p.m. CST on January 31.
    • Applicants will choose either the Two-Year Track or the LPN-RN One-Year Track.
  • Have all learning supports completed before the Nursing Program application deadline.
  • The deadline to submit the Nursing Program application and to submit the HESI Transcript from Elsevier is January 31 at 4:30 p.m. CST. Keep your receipt from Elsevier so you can demonstrate that your transcript was ordered by the January 31 deadline.

Apply to the Two-Year PrograM

Requirements for Two-Year Applicants

To be considered for admission to the Nursing Program at Motlow State, students must first apply, submit required documents, including all transcripts, and be admitted to the college. Prospective nursing students will declare Health Sciences as their major until accepted into the Nursing Program. The Nursing Program admission is competitive, and admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the Nursing Program.

  • Be admitted to the college.
  • Take the HESI entrance exam with the required components. The required components are math, reading comprehension, vocabulary and general knowledge, grammar, anatomy and physiology, learning style, and personality test. The computer-based format test is administered September through January at the Fayetteville, Moore County (Tullahoma), McMinnville and Smyrna campuses as well as virtual online testing. Availability will vary. Students wishing to take the exam at Motlow should consult the RegisterBlast link for the most updated test schedule. If you took the HESI exam at another college or during the previous application cycle, order your transcript from Elsevier and have them email the transcript to [email protected] by the application deadline.
    • Transcripts must be on file with the nursing department by January 31 at 4:30 PM to be accepted.
    • Earn an 85% or greater composite score on the HESI entrance exam.
  • Have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or greater on a 4.0 scale (GPA is calculated only on the completed general education courses required by the Nursing Program at the time of application). If required science courses are completed before admission to the Nursing Program, the courses must have been completed within five years of entering the Nursing Program, and a grade of “C” or greater must have been earned. If it has been over five years or a grade is less than a “C,” the course will need to be retaken.
    • Complete required learning support courses by the January nursing application deadline.
    • If A&P and Microbiology have already been taken, they must have been taken within five years of beginning the Nursing Program and completed with a “C” or better.
    • If MATH 1530 has been taken, a grade of “C” or better must have been earned.
    • Quality points can be earned by completing BIOL 2010, BIOL 2020, MATH 1530, and ENGL 1010 before the January 31 application deadline. Grades of an “A” or “B” will provide 25 points per course for a possible total of 100 points. *BIOL 2010 and BIOL 2020 must have been taken within five years of beginning the Nursing Program. Students exempted from ENGL 1010 by documented ACT scores or AP scores will receive the quality points for ENGL 1010.

Point Calculation

  1. HESI entrance exam (300 points if entrance exam points equal 100%. Percentage of points are awarded for entrance exam scores of less than 100%. For example: for an entrance exam score of 85%, multiple 300 points by .85 = 255 points)
  2. GPA (300 points for a collegiate GPA of 4.0 on general education courses required by the Nursing Program. The GPA at the end of the fall semester in the year before admission is used for this calculation. Percentage of points are awarded for GPAs less than 4.0. For example: for a GPA of 3.0, divide 3.0 by 4 = 0.75 and multiply by 300 = 225 points)
  3. Award quality points
    • BIOL 2010 with an A or B: + 25 points (must meet currency requirement)
    • BIOL 2020 with an A or B: + 25 points (must meet currency requirement)
    • MATH 1530 with an A or B: +25 points
    • ENGL 1010 with an A or B: +25 points (Students who have advanced standing / placement will be awarded 25 points)
  4. Tally points

Student Selection

Applicants are ranked in numerical order from highest to lowest based on the point calculation criteria. Students are selected to fill the class based on this numerical ranking. Students are notified of their fall semester admission status in April by their Motlow email.

Non-LPN students admitted to the Nursing Program must attend the Nursing Program Orientation. This orientation is generally held in May. The date, time, and location of the orientation are in the program admission email.

Apply to the One-Year LPN-RN Program

Requirements for LPN-RN Applicants

To be considered for admission to the Nursing Program at Motlow State, students must first apply, submit required documents, including all transcripts, and be admitted to the college. Prospective nursing students will declare Health Sciences as their major until accepted into the Nursing Program. The Nursing Program admission is competitive, and admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the Nursing Program.

The Nursing Program offers a three-semester transition program for LPNs who seek to become a Registered Nurse.

  • Be admitted to the college.
  • Take the HESI Nursing Fundamentals exam. The computer-based format test is administered September through January at the Fayetteville, Moore County (Tullahoma), McMinnville and Smyrna campuses as well as virtual online testing. Availability will vary. Students wishing to take the exam at Motlow should consult the RegisterBlast link for the most updated test schedule. If you took the Nursing Fundamentals exam at another college or during the previous application cycle, order your transcript from Elsevier and have them email the transcript to [email protected] by the application deadline. 
    • Transcripts must be on file with the nursing department by January 31 at 4:30 PM to be accepted.
    • Earn a score of 900 or higher on the HESI Nursing Fundamentals exam. The conversion score is used to award points.
  • Have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or greater on a 4.0 scale (GPA is calculated only on the completed general education courses required by the Nursing Program at the time of application). *If required science courses are completed before admission to the Nursing Program, the courses must have been completed within five years of entering the Nursing Program, and a grade of “C” or greater must have been earned. If it has been over five years or a grade is less than a “C,” the course will need to be retaken.
    • Complete required learning support courses by the January nursing application deadline. 
    • Complete BIOL 2010 and BIOL 2020 with a grade of “C” or better before starting the LPN-RN Transition Course. The courses must have been taken within five years of beginning the Nursing Program.
    • Complete ENGL 1010, MATH 1530, and PSYC 1030 prior to beginning the LPN to RN Transition Course. A grade of C or better must have been earned for MATH 1530.
  • Be a graduate of an accredited practical nurse program.
  • Email a scanned copy of an LPN license to [email protected] by the application deadline of January 31 at 4:30 p.m. CST.
  • Quality points can be earned by completing BIOL 2010, BIOL 2020, MATH 1530, and ENGL 1010 before the January 31 application deadline. Grades of an “A” or “B” will provide 25 points per course for a possible total of 75 points. *BIOL 2010 must have been taken within five years of beginning the Nursing Program. Students exempted from ENGL 1010 by documented ACT scores or AP scores will receive the quality points for ENGL 1010.

TCAT Graduates

  • Students that graduated from a TCAT 3 years or less prior to the summer of entry and passed their LPN Exit Exam, may substitute their exit exam score for their HESI Entrance Exam. Students will need to submit official TCAT transcripts to the Nursing Department as well as have official test transcripts sent to the department.
  • Students that graduated from a TCAT are required to have MATH 1530, PSYC 1030, and BIOL 2010 completed prior to the summer semester of entry. A & P II and English 1010 must be taken as co-requisits in the summer if not taken prior to entering the program.

 Point calculation

  1. HESI Nursing Fundamentals exam – maximum points possible are 300 for a conversion score of 100%. A percentage of points will be awarded for nursing fundamental exam scores less than 100%. For example, a conversion fundamentals exam score of 85% will equate to 255 points (300 x 0.85 = 255).
  2. Grade Point Average (GPA) – maximum points possible are 300 for a GPA of 4.0 calculated using the courses required by the Nursing Program. The GPA at the end of the fall semester before admission is used in the calculation. A percentage of points will be awarded for GPA’s less than
    4.0. For example, a GPA of 3.0 will equate to 225 points (3.0 / 4.0 = 0.75 x 300 = 225).
  3. Award Quality Points – Quality points will be added to the students’ points if the course has been completed by the end of the fall semester before admission to the Nursing Program.
    • BIOL 2010 with a grade of A or B: + 25 points (must meet currency requirement)
    • BIOL 2020 with a grade of A or B: + 25 points (must meet currency requirement)
    • ENGL 1010 with a grade of A or B: + 25 points
    • MATH 1530 with a grade of A or B: + 25 points
