DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES PROGRAM MATHEMATICS

DSPM 0700 BASIC MATHEMATICS: 3 sem hrs cr
This course places emphasis on the principles and applications of arithmetic including reading and writing numerals; fundamental operations on whole numbers and common and decimal fractions; percent, ratio and proportion; rounding; introductory topics from geometry; determining arithmetic mean; interpreting graphs; the English and metric measuring systems; exploring steps necessary to solve word problems; operations with signed numbers; and evaluating variable expressions and solving linear equations.

DSPM 0800 BEGINNING ALGEBRA: 3 sem hrs cr
This course is a study of the properties of the real number system, arithmetic operations with rational numbers and order of operations; evaluation and simplification of variable expressions; solutions of linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable; graphing linear equations and inequalities; problem-solving; polynomial arithmetic; operations with integer exponents; factoring polynomials and solving quadratic equations by factoring. Prerequisite: Documented competency in DSPM 0700 skills.

DSPM 0850 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: 3 sem hrs cr
This course is a study of algebraic fractions, graphs, slopes, and equations of lines; solving systems of linear equations and inequalities; operations involving radicals and rational exponents; graphing and solving quadratic equations and inequalities; and functions. Applications are studied with each topic. Students with only one credit in high school algebra must be tested to verify eligibility for DSPM 0850 without successful completion of DSPM 0800. Prerequisite: Documented competency in DSPM 0800 skills.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES PROGRAM READING

DSPR 0700 BASIC READING: 3 sem hrs cr
This course concerns reading fundamentals--identifying main ideas with major and minor supporting details, sequencing, locating facts, using contextual clues, drawing conclusions, and making inferences. Increasing vocabulary is a major component of the course.

DSPR 0800 DEVELOPMENTAL READING: 3 sem hrs cr
This course is designed to improve reading fluency. Identifying main ideas with major and minor supporting details, sequencing, locating facts, using contextual clues, drawing conclusions, making inferences, understanding figurative language, and detecting tones and mood are skills that are developed. Vocabulary extension, critical thinking skills, and pleasure reading are stressed. Prerequisite: Documented competency in DSPR 0700 skills.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES PROGRAM STUDY SKILLS

DSPS 0800 DEVELOPMENTAL STUDY SKILLS: 3 sem hrs cr
This course emphasizes academic success skills necessary for students to achieve their educational goals. Topics such as time management, communications skills, study techniques, library use, note-taking, and exam-taking are emphasized. The course also includes goal-setting, study habits, attitude development, and current issues which college students face. Students whose assessment results indicate placement in DSPS 0800, Developmental Study Skills, must complete this course within their first 12 credit hours of enrollment.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES PROGRAM WRITING

DSPW 0700 BASIC WRITING: 3 sem hrs cr
This course includes a review of rudimentary skills in grammar, mechanics, punctuation, capitalization, and effective sentence writing. Additionally, students learn to use the dictionary and write business and friendly letters.

DSPW 0800 DEVELOPMENTAL WRITING: 3 sem hrs cr
This course develops skills in punctuation, sentence writing, paragraphing, and outlining. The course emphasizes proofreading skills, conceiving ideas for writing, and varying writing styles as paragraph development merges into essay writing. Prerequisite: Documented competency in DSPW 0700 skills.
