HESI (Health Education Systems) Entrance Examination

What is the HESI Entrance Exam?

The entrance examination for the Motlow Nursing Program is the Admission Assessment by Health Education Systems (HESI). Areas covered on the test must include math, reading comprehension, vocabulary and general knowledge, grammar, and anatomy and physiology. There will also be a Learning Style/Personality Profile assessment included. Only these sections will be used to calculate the score considered for entrance into the nursing program. The maximum time allowed for the exam is 3 hours, but each person works at his/her own pace, so it could take less than 3 hours for you to complete the exam. You must register indicating the campus you wish to take the exam.

When do I take the test and how do I sign up to take it?

The entrance exam is a computer-based test. The test is administered at Motlow State Community College on the Moore and McMinnville Campuses in October and February. The test is administered on the Smyrna Campus in October and March. You can register for the entrance exam by completing the following steps:

3. Click Testing/Proctoring Services
4. Click HESI Entrance Exam and complete the application

Registration for the HESI Entrance Examination opens August 1, 2013. The registration deadline to take the test in the Fall is October 4, 2013. The registration deadline to take the test in the Spring is January 31, 2014. All applications fees must be received by the due date. NO EXCEPTIONS. Test-takers are allowed to take the test once each academic year. Seats are limited!

PLEASE NOTE: If a prior current HESI entrance exam score or one from another institution is to be used, this information must be indicated on the admission application and a copy of the test score submitted with the application prior to January 31. Prior HESI scores or those from another institution received after January 31 will not be considered.(Current is defined as the test currently being used for entrance exam scores taken within the last five years.)

What is the minimum score allowed on the HESI Entrance for admission into the Nursing Program?

To be eligible for the nursing program, you must make a minimum of 75% on the required Admission Assessment. Your score will be available at the end of the exam. Please KEEP a copy of your scores for your personal records. Test scores are valid for 5 years.

What is the cost of the exam?

Cost of the examination is $50.00. The NON-REFUNDABLE testing fee must be paid by cash/money order/cashier's check/ made payable to MSCC. Mail the payment and your e-mailed test reservation form to:

The last day to register and pay for the fall test is October 4 at 4:30 pm. The last day to register and pay for the spring test is January 31, 2014 at 4:30 pm. Contact the Testing Center for information on how to pay by credit/debit card.

When will I receive a confirmation letter for the test?

You are not officially registered for the test until you receive a confirmation letter by mail or email. To ensure you are registered for the test, you must complete the online registration form and submit payment. After you submit payment, you will receive a confirmation letter. If you haven't paid the registration fee within 10 days after you complete the online registration form, your application will become invalid and you must reapply.

Reschedule Policy

Due to the high volume of applications, we cannot change your test date after you are registered for the test. The testing fee is non-refundable.

Inclement Weather

During inclement weather when tests are cancelled or delayed, examinees should use their discretion when snow and icing conditions prohibit safe travel. Because weather conditions may vary in the 11-county service area, test-takers are asked to limit their phone calls to the campus. Officials recommend that test- takers listen to radio and television stations in the immediate communities for information or visit Motlow's web page www.mscc.edu.

What Should I Bring to the Exam?

You must have a photo ID to be able to take the examination. Food and drinks are not allowed at the computers, but you may bring a snack and leave it at the back of the room to have during a break.

Is there a Study Guide for the HESI nursing entrance exam?

Yes. Health Education Systems publishes a guide to help you prepare for the exam. You may purchase the HESI Admission Assessment Study Guide in the Motlow College bookstore, located in Forrester Center, or you may order the same study guide online:
