Motlow Nurses Donate to Backpack Program
November 17, 2011
The Student Nurse Association (SNA) of Motlow College recently collected food to benefit Coffee County's Backpack Program. According to Reba Walters, level II coordinator for the nursing program, "The idea came from one of our students, Julie Brawner. She was doing clinical rotations with the Coffee County school system and helped pack food into students' backpacks to take home for the weekend."
The student nurse saw firsthand how many children and families were being helped by the Backpack Program. She and fellow nursing students chose the program as one of their community service projects for the semester. Abigail Spry, Breakthrough to Nursing representative and Tod Vandenbossche, a member of SNA, helped organize a food drive to benefit the Backpack Program. Collection boxes were placed at Motlow's Moore County campus as well as Fayetteville, McMinnville and Smyrna centers.
Recently, Jan Thornton, director of health services, and LeAnne Evans, coordinator of family resources for Coffee County Schools visited Motlow to accept the food donations. The SNA also presented a $500 check to the school representatives to help with the program. According to Walters, the money donated was earned by various fundraisers carried out by student nurses.
Thornton thanked the nursing department and students saying, "This donation of food and money has come at a wonderful time because we send extra food home for the holidays."For additional information, or to make donations to the Backpack Program, contact Thornton at 931-723-1550 or email@example.com.
