October 24, 2013

Paige Hendrickson, a librarian from the Motlow College Smyrna Center, reads The Great Fuzz Frenzy to a kindergarten class at Stewartsboro Elementary in Smyrna. Paige, along with Elizabeth White, in instructor at the Smyrna Center, volunteered as part of the Rutherford County Reading in Schools Day event.
Two volunteers from the Motlow College Smyrna Center recently took part in the Reading in Schools Day event in Rutherford County. Paige Hendrickson, a librarian at the Smyrna Center, and Elizabeth White, an instructor of learning support reading, travelled to elementary schools in the Smyrna area and read to students.

"I enjoyed reading to the students and look forward to participating in Reading in Schools Day next year," said White in regard to her time at Stewartsboro Elementary School. "It was a great experience."

Hendrickson travelled to three schools, including John Coleman Elementary, Smyrna Elementary and Stewartsboro Elementary. She recalls that the children became so involved in a story at one point that they were all less than a foot away from the book by the time she had finished reading.

"This entire experience was rewarding for me personally," said Hendrickson, "but more importantly, I could see the impact on the children directly and I hope to make this an annual tradition." She serves on the Literary Council of the Rutherford County literary initiative Read to Succeed.
