Motlow College McMinnville Center Phi Theta Kappa members clean up Barren Fork River

Oct. 14, 2014

Members of the Motlow College McMinnville Center Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society recently helped clean up the Warren County portion of the Barren Fork River.

Members of Phi Theta Kappa at Motlow's McMinnville Center recently cleaned up the Barren Fork River as part of their Honors in Action campaign. Pictured, from left, are Blake Jenkins, Gregg Garrison, associate professor of biology and PTK advisor, Melody Anderson and Ella Hall.
"While doing research for our Honors in Action project we found that our rivers were in desperate need of some cleaning," said Dayron Deaton-Owens, assistant professor of psychology and sociology and a McMinnville Center PTK advisor. "As a group we decided to help."

Fourteen McMinnville PTK members traveled in kayaks while picking up trash and various other items in an effort to preserve the beauty of the waterway in Warren County.

"Throughout the day we picked up several bags full of garbage and also picked up several tires along the way," continued Deaton-Owens. "It was a very successful day for us, though the weather was a little undesirable. Even with those elements we trudged through and made a difference in our community."
