Motlow College in Smyrna Collect Shoes for Soles4Souls Donation
October 10, 2011
Students, faculty and staff at Motlow College Smyrna Center are collecting shoes to donate to the Nashville office of the national charity, Soles4Souls. People wishing to donate new or slightly worn shoes, or money to purchase shoes or pay for shipping costs, are asked to make donations at the Smyrna Center through November 7.
Moneda Grimes, assistant professor of sociology, and Donna Dunaway, assistant director of financial aid at the Smyrna Center, are heading up the college's donation efforts along with Ashley North, vice president of the Student Government Association. They stress that your gift of footwear is important to children and adults around the world. Footwear can help eliminate the spreading of diseases through the foot, as well as help children obtain an education - as many schools have footwear requirements to attend.
Wayne Elsey, founder and CEO of Soles4Souls, Inc., conceived the idea for the nonprofit agency after the 2004 tsunami that hit Southeast Asia and Hurricane Katrina which hit the Gulf Coast just months later. The image of a single shoe floating was his inspiration. After those tragedies he received donations from footwear companies, retailers, churches, nonprofit ministries, civic groups, schools and individuals. He made arrangements for the donations to go from these groups to the people who desperately needed footwear. Since those first donations the organization has worked to change the world one pair of shoes at a time.
Volunteers at Motlow College encourage everyone to share their shoes with the reminder that, "Your extra pair could be their first!"
