Sarah Toombs of Shelbyville has received the Rhonda and Max Jarrell Nursing Scholarship at Motlow College for the second time, according to Jan Rogers, director of advancement at the college.
Toombs is a second-year nursing student at Motlow. After graduating from Lapel High School in Indiana, she said she lacked the self confidence to attend nursing school. Instead, she went to work at a factory and remained there for 10 years. In 2005, she moved south. After caring for an elderly woman, Toombs said she "felt incredibly fulfilled" and "realized that nursing is the perfect career for me."
"I am very grateful to Roni and Max for this opportunity to help me further my education and reach my goal of becoming an RN," Toombs said. The Jarrells established the Jarrell Nursing Scholarship in 2003. Mrs. Jarrell is a former on-site visitor who evaluated certified nurses aide programs for the Virginia Board of Nursing and owns Creative Health Consultants, Inc. Mr. Jarrell is a retired FBI fingerprint specialist and is owner of Professional Fingerprint Services.
The Jarrell Nursing Scholarship and other similar scholarships are awarded through the Motlow College Foundation. Anyone can contribute to existing scholarships or establish new ones. For more information, visit the foundation's website at www.mscc.edu/advancement/foundation, call Rogers at 931-393-1692 or 1-800-654-4877 ext. 1692, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
In addition to scholarships available through the foundation, there are many other opportunities available to students through financial aid and institutional scholarships. They are listed on Motlow's website at www.mscc.edu/scholarships.
