Motlow College supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Oct. 1 activities

Sept. 25, 2014

The Motlow College Moore County campus is hosting a 'Pink-Out' in support of breast cancer awareness and other cancers on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited and encouraged to wear pink on that day and meet in the courtyard at 1:45 p.m.

The Student Government Association (SGA), Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and the Office of Student and Campus Relations are all collaborating in this effort to bring more awareness and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A balloon release in the courtyard is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Prior to the balloon release, cancer survivors will be recognized, followed by a walk around the campus loop road and an awareness reception in the Crouch Center lobby. In the event of rain, the walk will be held inside Copperweld Arena.

PTK will again place a Wall of Courage in the Lincoln County Bank Dining Hall, and students and faculty are encouraged to sign the wall in order to show support for those fighting cancer and to honor those who are victims of the disease.

"While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages, and to encourage others to do the same," said Brenda Cannon, director of student and campus relations for the College. "A lot of progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done."

Wristbands and buttons will be available courtesy of the SGA, and literature has been donated by the American Cancer Society and will be available to attendees at the Oct. 1 event and throughout the month.

"Breast cancer and all other cancers are real," added Cannon. "We all have or will experience cancer within our personal circles. Let's fight this disease together."
