Miranda Vinson, a nursing student at Motlow College, thought she was going to have to drop out of school because of financial difficulties. Then just four days before her tuition was due for the fall semester, she received great news. She was named the recipient of a scholarship from the Motlow College Ladies Philanthropic Society.
"I was so thankful," Vinson said. "I was worried that I would have to give up my goal of becoming a nurse."
Vinson is a 2002 graduate of Warren County High School. She lives in McMinnville with her husband, Derek, and three-year-old daughter, Raylee. The Motlow Ladies' Philanthropic Society first met in the spring of 2009. Since then, over 120 members have donated more than $76,000 for scholarships and student support. The organization's main focus is on helping women over the age of 23 who are in financial need, according to Jan Rogers, director of advancement at the college.
The Ladies' Philanthropic Society Scholarship and similar scholarships are awarded through the Motlow College Foundation. Anyone can contribute to existing scholarships or establish new ones.
