Schwartz receives Henry Davis Memorial Nursing Scholarship

August 29, 2013

Josh Paul Schwartz of Shelbyville has been awarded the Henry Davis Memorial Nursing Scholarship by the Motlow College Foundation at Motlow State Community College for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Josh Paul Schwartz, center, is the recipient of the Henry Davis Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Motlow College. He is pictured with L. Wayne Bomar, trustee for the scholarship fund, and Jan Rogers, director of advancement at the college.
Josh and his wife, Amber, have twin daughters who are three years of age and they are expecting a third child in late February. Additionally, Josh is the Youth Minister at Fairlane Church of Christ in Shelbyville. His long term goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner.

At one time, Josh thought of following in his father's footsteps and becoming a doctor. However, he wound up following a different path and has served as a youth minister for over eight years. When it became clear that he wanted to pursue a different style of ministry, his dad reminded him that being a nurse is also a way of ministering.

The Henry Davis Memorial Scholarship was established by Mrs. Davis after his death. Mrs. Davis was a nurse in Nashville. She and Mr. Davis married later in life and relocated to Wartrace. Henry Davis was very involved in the walking horse industry and Highway 64 E has been named the Henry Davis Memorial Highway.

According to Mr. Wayne Bomar, who is Trustee for the scholarship fund, Mrs. Davis was always interested in nursing and in providing opportunities for young people. She recognized the benefit of nursing and helping the next generation. Being especially interested in helping Bedford County, Mrs. Davis requested that a nursing student from Bedford County receive the scholarship if possible. Also, she recognized that "the best nursing school is available here, bordering Bedford County, at Motlow State Community College."

The Motlow College Foundation is a 501c3 which enables donors to make tax deductible donations to support student needs. Interested parties may contact Jan Casey Rogers, director of advancement, at 931-393-1692.
