Motlow's ACE Program Allows Adults to Earn a Degree at Night

July 27, 2012

The Adult College Express (ACE) program celebrates its fifth year at Motlow College and continues to be a popular alternative educational opportunity for the busy adult. The classes are usually held one night a week and each group or cohort begins and goes through the 24-month program together. New cohorts will begin this fall at the Moore County, McMinnville and Fayetteville locations.

Charle Coffey, chair of the education department at Motlow and director of the ACE program said, "We treat the ACE students as an elite group of learners."She explained, "Three week's worth of work is covered in one evening and the students are held to the same standards as daytime, full-time students. The students take one class at a time; a 15 week course is condensed into five weeks; and then we move to the next subject. We limit the class size to 20 so instructors can physically have time to grade coursework and maintain a positive experience for all."

Degrees currently offered through the ACE program include: an AS (Associate of Science) in general studies, an AST (Associate of Science in Teaching) and an AAS (Associate of Applied Science) that prepares students for CDA (Child Development Associate). Childcare providers can also earn the Technical Certificate in Early Childhood Education that is embedded into this program.

Richard Voelkel of Flat Creek is currently enrolled in the ACE program at the Moore County campus. He explained that he has worked for years in his field and hasn't advanced because he didn't have a degree. He said, "My boss was in the ACE program and got his degree so I enrolled and I love it. Now I'm anxious to finish up and I would like to go on into the Trevecca program at Motlow." Voelkel was pleasantly surprised last fall when his daughter moved here from Massachusetts and enrolled in the same program. They are now on track to graduate together next spring. Laura Voelkel said, "I love the fact that I have the opportunity to be in the same graduating class as my father. I realize it's special for a father to watch his child grow and work toward their goals but it's an amazing feeling for a daughter to be able to watch her dad succeed at his dreams. I am so proud of him!"

Registration at Motlow continues through August 17 for fall admissions. Potential students interested in the ACE program are encouraged to contact the location they plan to attend as soon as possible to complete the additional registration requirements for the program and confirm the degree cohort available at each location.
