Motlow's Sonya Hood Elected Chair of External Affairs

Sonya Hood, director of disability services for Motlow College, was recently elected by the membership of Tennessee's Association on Higher Education And Disability (TN-AHEAD) to serve as their Chair of External Services. The AHEAD organization is an international professional membership for individuals involved in the development of policy and in the provisions of quality services to meet the needs of persons with disabilities involved in all areas of higher education.
As chair of external services for the Tennessee affiliation, Hood's responsibilities will include keeping the membership informed of current disability legislation as well as other legislative issues, changes and trends. Among her other duties she will also, upon approval by the Executive Board, communicate the TN-AHEAD positions on issues affecting students with disabilities.For more than three decades, AHEAD has provided training to higher education personnel through conferences, workshops, publications and consultation. The membership represents a diverse network of professionals who actively address disability issues on their campuses and in the field of higher education. The focus of the TN-AHEAD group is to provide professional support and development to over 30 colleges and universities who are post-secondary disability providers in the state of Tennessee.
When asked about her appointment Hood said, "I am humbled to be on the board and I hope to make a positive difference." She expanded by saying, "Our board represents four-year universities as well as community colleges across the state. My goal is to provide input to make beneficial changes for students with disabilities in post secondary education."
Hood received her bachelor's degree from Freed Hardeman University and her master's from University of North Texas. She and husband Jeremy live in Hillsboro and before coming to Motlow she worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor in Franklin and Coffee Counties.
