Kelsey Coombs Earns NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence
July 12, 2011
Former Motlow Lady Bucks softball player Kelsey Coombs was recently honored with the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, awarded to student athletes with a 4.0 grade point average. Coombs is believed to be the first softball player in school history to achieve the award.
"The key to being a successful student at Motlow is you just have to put the time in, focus on what you want to do and put your mind to it," Coombs said. "Especially at Motlow because the teachers are willing to work with students and you don't find that at a lot of schools."
The list of honorees was released by the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 2010-2011 season marks the 28th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom. With minimal changes, the NJCAA academic awards program has been in place since 1983.Coombs was a key component of Motlow's 2011 softball team, which finished the season with an outstanding 30-10 overall record. She played in 22 games and had five runs batted in and a triple. She was also featured during the academic year as part of Motlow's 'Student Success' initiative.
