Motlow College Smyrna Center offers new AAS degree in Information Systems TechnologyJune 28, 2013
To better prepare students for skilled technological positions in today's workforce, Motlow College is offering a new associate degree program in information systems technology this fall at its Smyrna Center, according to Cheryl Hyland, center director.
"The IST associate degree program was developed after careful and extensive research," she said. "We found that employers in area business and industry are seeking more skilled workers with credentials in computer and information systems. Motlow's new program will equip students with these skills."
Jeremy Mills, student success coordinator at Motlow's Smyrna Center, said students in the program can choose from two concentrations: information systems specialist, or office information technology.
"Students selecting the information systems specialist option will receive training in computer programming and system management essentials that will allow them to be highly effective in the demanding and fast-paced business environment," Mills said. "Graduates from the program will be able to fill business needs for webpage design and updates, business software systems support, and database management."
Courses within the information systems specialist concentration include information technology support skills, computer essentials, networking, advanced webpage development and database development.
The office information technology option focuses on microcomputer system management and troubleshooting in the office environment, Mills explained. Courses in this concentration include computer applications, event management, document publishing, webpage development and design, and fundamentals of sales and service.
