Motlow's Angela Burks featured at Julia Martin Art Gallery in Nashville

June 12, 2014

Angela Burks, Motlow College adjunct art instructor, finished her painting "Carnivalata" in December 2013. The oil and fabric piece is on display at the "Bevy: Round One" art show at the Julia Martin Gallery in Nashville through June 28.
The artwork of Motlow College adjunct professor Angela Burks is featured in an art show being hosted at Nashville's Julia Martin Gallery until June 28. Viewing times are between noon and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and is free to the public.

Burks, who teaches art at the Smyrna Center, is among four artists featured in the series, which Martin is calling "Bevy: Round One". Burks' floral paintings are inspired by 17th century Dutch still lifes, paintings which capture inanimate objects such as the flowers in Burks' work.

"I loved, loved, loved the Dutch still lifes, especially the floral paintings, all dark and dramatic and creepy," said Burks. "They have the same symbolic meaning that all of my work has always been about, the Vanitas paintings with the transience of life and all that kind of stuff wrapped up in it."
