May 30, 2012

Apple Gets an Award

Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of Motlow College, center, was awarded the prestigious Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction for 2012 during the recent Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) annual convention held in Nashville. The award is named for the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, PTK's longest serving Board of Directors Chair and President Emeritus of Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash. Pictured with Dr. Apple, from left, are Dr. Rod Risley, executive director of PTK and Dr. George Boggs, former president of the American Association of Community Colleges.

Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of Motlow College, recently received the 2012 Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during the annual Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) convention in Nashville. The honor is named after the late Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, who served as Chair of Phi Theta Kappa's Board of Directors for 20 years; she was President Emeritus of Highline Community College in Washington.

Twenty college presidents/campus CEOs from across the United States received the award with Dr. Apple being the only one recognized for the state of Tennessee. A large contingency of Motlow PTK officers, students and advisors attended the convention to help represent Motlow and Tenn. as the host state.

According to the PTK headquarters in Jackson, Miss., Gordon Award recipients are recognized for providing extensive support and a variety of resources for their colleges' PTK chapters. Speaking at chapter inductions, serving as a presidential ambassador and supporting All-State Academic Team programs are all examples of how a president can help grow a local chapter.

Dr. Apple said, "It was truly an honor to be selected for the Shirley B. Gordon award. PTK provides a great opportunity for honor students to make meaningful contributions to our colleges and communities. It is vital to support an organization that builds leaders for our future."

PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,280 chapters on community college and two-year campuses in all 50 of the United States. Motlow College sponsors the Alpha Xi Pi chapter of PTK.
