Messer Construction praised as Motlow College Smyrna Center expansion project nears completion

May 28, 2013

As a much anticipated expansion project nears completion at Motlow College Smyrna Center, Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of the college, said the construction process has been a positive one, thanks in part to the professionalism and knowledge exhibited by Messer Construction Co., the project's contractor and construction manager.

Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of Motlow College, visits the construction site of a new building at Motlow's Smyrna Center. With Apple are Chris Steigerwald, at left, and Adam Laker of Messer Construction Co., the project's contractor and construction manager. The two-story building will be open before the fall semester begins.
"Everyone involved with this project at Motlow has been impressed not only by Messer as a company, but by each Messer employee assigned to the Smyrna expansion project," Apple said. "Without question, each Messer employee has been the consummate professional, displaying a great deal of expertise and remaining focused on the needs of Motlow."

Apple said two Messer leaders - Chris Steigerwald and Adam Laker - were instrumental in the project's success. Steigerwald is senior project executive, and Laker is project manager.

"Chris Steigerwald and Adam Laker have added significant value to our expansion project," she said. "In the initial phase of construction, they presented numerous ideas to reduce costs but preserve the integrity of the design. They understood and shared Motlow's need to have the building open for classes this fall, and throughout the construction process, they displayed outstanding knowledge of project management to meet budgets and schedules."

"From our very first meeting, Dr. Apple had a clear vision of what this facility would be," Steigerwald said. "She made it clear that if construction fell behind schedule, a student's education fell behind schedule. That had a real impact on us."

The 35,000-square-foot building, like the first building at Smyrna Center on Motlow College Drive, is constructed on land donated by the Town of Smyrna. It was designed by Thomas, Miller & Partners, PLLC, and includes classrooms; nursing, chemistry and microbiology labs; computer labs; a student success center, and a student lounge.
