Motlow nursing students volunteer for Special Kids race

April 11, 2013

Members of the Student Nurses Association at Motlow College and Cathy Simpson (third from right), SNA faculty representative, prepare to hand out water to runners in the 2nd annual Special Kids Race in Murfreesboro. Nursing students are, from left, Tracy Lenfant of Smyrna; Brittany McNair and Riva Sharvo-Cundall, both of Murfreesboro; Leah Sharpton of Tullahoma; and Kerri Kahn of Murfreesboro.
Student Nurses Association members in the Motlow College Nursing Program volunteered to help with the 2nd annual Special Kids Race at the Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & Surgicenter last month, according to Cathy Simpson, an assistant professor of nursing at Motlow's Smyrna Center and SNA faculty representative.

Simpson said during their first year in Motlow's Nursing Program, some students are assigned to work with Special Kids in Murfreesboro as part of clinical requirements. Special Kids is a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic rehabilitation and professional nursing services to children with special needs.

"Their experience at Special Kids left such an impact that they wanted to give back, and volunteering at the race provided the opportunity," Simpson said. "SNA officers organized this volunteer effort, and 12 nursing students volunteered to distribute water and provide medical assistance, which fortunately wasn't needed, to runners. Also, other students and their families participated in the actual race, which raised more than $150,000."
