"Often the community college is the first chance, the second chance, or the only chance that students have to improve their life situation," she says.
A former Tennessee Air National Guard flight nurse, Apple wanted a career that would allow her to serve others and improve the quality of their lives, and so she turned to education. Under her leadership, Motlow has been distinguished as one of the country's fastest-growing community colleges and listed among the nation's top 50 community college education programs.
Apple oversees approximately 430 employees and uses her influence to ensure that the school of 4,800 students across four campuses, including Smyrna, provides high-quality educational programs for students transferring to four-year institutions, obtaining a technical degree, or seeking lifelong learning experiences.
Her commitment to philanthropy is evidenced in her personal work with the Motlow Ladies Philanthropic Society, which provides educational opportunities to mature women, and Motlow's STEM Endowment, which gives middle school students hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math experiences. She also serves on the Motlow College Foundation board and several community arts, health, and charitable boards.
For other women in business, Apple recommends finding a female mentor and cheering on other women. "Be an encourager; be yourself," she says. "Know and own your strengths and weaknesses; and surround yourself with people brighter and more talented than you."
