Motlow Ladies' Philanthropic Society Spring Chari-Tea is March 12Feb. 24, 2015
The Motlow College Foundation will host its annual Motlow Ladies' Philanthropic Society (MLPS) Spring Chari-Tea on Thursday, March 12, at 2 p.m. in the Clayton-Glass Library on the Moore County campus. The event has taken place every year since 2009, when the MLPS was formed.
MLPS is a group of women dedicated to making a difference in the lives of other women, with the main focus being on the non-traditional (23 years and over) student in need of financial assistance. Donations aid women who do not qualify for the HOPE scholarship and who rarely meet federal aid requirements.
Membership is made up of ladies who donate at least $100 per year. "This amount approximately equates to giving up one lunch-out per month," said Jan Rogers, director of advancement at Motlow College. "The group is very fortunate to have so many ladies who wish to help female students. Many give more than the minimum annually."
In March 2014, a current member of the group issued a match-funding challenge. Up to $25,000 raised by the group, over and above the normal $100 membership donation, would be matched. This was increased to $50,000 when the original $25,000 was met.
"We are very close to raising the required $50,000," added Rogers. "This will result in a $100,000 endowment for the scholarship fund so that it will remain in place in perpetuity with only the earnings from the endowment being awarded in scholarship."
The Motlow Ladies' Philanthropic Society has 120 members who have donated over $98,000 for scholarships and student support in the past six years.
The menu will feature pineapple and cucumber sandwiches, carrot cake tea sandwiches and cranberry feta pinwheels. For sweets, there will be lemon curd-filled cupcakes, caramel-filled maple pecan cookies and mocha crinkles. The menu will also feature blueberry scones with orange cream cheese.
