Club Day a Hit with Students at Motlow's Smyrna Center

February 20, 2012

Students interested in everything from mitochondria to William Shakespeare had the opportunity to join various clubs during recent Club Day activities at Motlow College's Smyrna Center. Tables decorated with club themes lined the hallways as club members handed out informational brochures and talked with prospective members.

Club Day is a popular event enjoyed by students, faculty, and staff, according to Jeremy Mills, an academic advisor at Smyrna Center.

"Club memberships give students the opportunity to fellowship with students who have similar interests," Mills said. "Clubs also add to the overall college experience and promote leadership skills. Plus, they are fun."

Mills added that Whitney North, executive vice president of the Smyrna Student Government Association, which sponsored Club Day, was instrumental in the success of this year's event.

"We had 14 people sign up for the Biology Club," said club member Hassan Alwan. "A lot of people joined clubs because they were offered. It's a good opportunity to know what is available. We are excited about our upcoming field trip to Cheekwood Botanical Gardens in Nashville in April."

Janet Knorp, secretary for the Student Nurses Association, said she and other nursing students shared information about getting into Motlow's Nursing Program, and Wes Guthrie of the Rotaract Club said his club attained 18 new members. The Rotaract Club is a Rotary-sponsored service club.

Student Government Represented at Club Day - Bridget Carlson, a member of the Student Government Association at Motlow College in Smyrna, talks with Nicholas Bush during Club Day at Motlow's Smyrna Center. Bush is an assistant professor of English at the college.
Some students like psychology major Morgan Hamilton, joined more than one organization.

"I joined the SGA and Rotaract," she said. "I would like to get involved with the college. I was never involved in high school. Rotaract appealed to me because I always have wanted to be more involved in the community."

Other clubs and organizations represented during the Smyrna Center's Club Day, in addition to those already mentioned, were the Presidential Student Leadership Institute, Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Club, Literary Club, Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
