An Unexpected Friendship is a reenactment of a meeting between Frederick Douglass, portrayed by Crutcher, and President Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by Boggs. On August 10, 1863, Douglass became the first black man in history to have an audience with President Lincoln alone. Lincoln wanted to hear Douglass' opinion of the Emancipation Proclamation, and Douglass was eager to ask Lincoln some hard questions.
The men had many things in common but were very different in many ways as well. While both had the same goal in mind, each had a different plan of how to progress toward the goal. Their meeting helped them understand each other's point of view.
Crutcher is retired from the U.S. Army and is a former assistant professor at the University of Kentucky's Lexington Community College. He began his acting career with Images Modeling and Acting Agency in Kentucky and has been in several television commercials and training videos. Crutcher is a devout scholar of Frederick Douglass and believes his calling is to share Douglass' principles of freedom, equality, religion, and self-esteem. Boggs has an extensive theatrical background and was first introduced to playing the role of President Lincoln for a production group at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville. Afterward, he felt a deep need for continuing to research and study the historical figure. After reading countless books and papers, he gained an even deeper passion of further portraying the 16th President, and for the past decade and a half has been presenting Lincoln through his program Meet Mr. Lincoln.
