Languages Department
Communication skills are increasingly important in today’s world of downsizing and multitasking. In fact, almost all careers now require written and spoken communication skills. For instance, Nancy Quinn Fagan, the author of “Make Workplace Changes Work for You,” points out that employers in the health care field “want to hire well-rounded individuals with good communication skills, computer skills and problem-solving skills.” An article in Career Report: The Sciences and Mathematics states that “A critical part of any science career is communication” (Kugler). The Languages Department at Motlow College prepares students for academic endeavors and life in today’s job market by developing vital skills in written communication and the analysis of written material, and students also gain an introduction to and appreciation for foreign languages and cultures, an ever important facet of life in a global economy.
In addition to offering courses that fulfill student’s core requirements, the Language Department is proud to sponsor The Distillery, a nationally recognized literary journal, which has featured works by distinguished authors and artists such as award-winning Jill Wright and Kat Meads.
The department also hosts a Writer’s Conference every fall and publishes a student literary journal, The Mosaic, which appears on campus every spring semester.
