Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree Checklist

Program Description

Motlow State Community College offers courses leading to the Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education. The major is open to all persons, including paraprofessionals, wishing to gain professional expertise in the education and care of children from infant through age eight.
The academic coursework in this program are designed:
  • to provide an introduction to the early childhood profession
  • to demonstrate practices relating to safety, health and nutrition as it relates to the early childhood setting and how to apply these practices in creating an appropriate learning environment
  • to highlight considerations of the role of the family and community in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth of the child
  • to demonstrate research-based principles and practices for providing young children ages birth through eight a strong foundation in language and literacy
  • to highlight the standards, principles, and practices in teaching mathematics and science to young children ages birth through eight

Practical Experience

Students will be involved in the following:
  • supervised practicum in early childhood practical experiences
  • curriculum planning
  • materials preparation
  • problem solving
  • skills development
