Lady Bucks Ready For Tournament

The Motlow Lady Bucks (4-20, 3-15) will try to put a disappointing regular season behind them and begin preparation for the upcoming TCCAA/Region VII Tournament following losses in their final two regular season contests over the weekend. The tournament begins later this week in Dyersburg, TN.

The Lady Bucks, riding a season-best two game winning streak, dropped a 77-44 decision to Cleveland St. on Friday, Feb. 26 in Cleveland, TN, then traveled to Chattanooga and lost 76-62 to Chattanooga St. on Saturday, Feb. 27.

LaDonna Bailey and Crystal Moore led the Lady Bucks in scoring in Cleveland with 12 and 10 points respectively. Jane Barnes had eight points and led the squad with nine rebounds.

Barnes had a great game in the loss to Chattanooga St., scoring 14 points while pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out five assists. Moore was equally impressive as she scored 12 points and had seven rebounds. Bailey narrowly missed a triple-double with eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.

Lady Bucks Win Again!

The Motlow Lady Bucks (3-13, 4-18) accomplished something they haven't done all season when they captured their second consecutive win on Saturday, Feb. 20 by beating Columbia St. 74-57 on sophomore recognition day at Copperweld Arena.

The Lady Bucks will complete the 2009-2010 regular season when they travel to Cleveland St. and Chattanooga St. this coming weekend. The two road games were postponed because of snow on Jan. 29 and Jan. 30.

For the Lady Bucks, who broke a 15-game losing streak with a win over Jackson St. on Wednesday, their second straight win was extremely satisfying as Motlow came from behind multiple times in the first half, initially falling behind 11-4 with 12:12 remaining.

The Lady Bucks stormed back though, taking their first lead 14-13 with 8:25 left when Jane Barnes nailed a three pointer on her way to 11 first half points. The Lady Bucks maintained their lead and ended the half leading 33-30.

Columbia St. opened the final 20 minutes with a quick 4-0 run to take a 34-33 lead. That is when the Lady Bucks' offense really got untracked behind Katora Fleming and Natalie Collins, who combined for 22 points after the intermission.

The crowd really got behind the Lady Bucks and spurred them to a five point advantage at 41-36 with 13:28 remaining. Then Collins, the lone sophomore on the team playing her final home game, nailed a three pointer and came right back with a two-point shot to extend the lead to 10 points at 46-36.

That quick five-point swing proved to be the decisive moment as the Lady Bucks never looked back, finally enjoying their biggest lead of the game at 72-52 with 1:21 remaining. Motlow's defense was outstanding, forcing Columbia St. into 15 second-half turnovers and 23 for the game.

Fleming led the scoring with 19 points and pulled down four rebounds to lead four double-figure scorers for Motlow. Jane Barnes added 16 points and five boards, while Collins and Crystal Moore each scored 13 points. LaDonna Bailey scored seven and led the Lady Bucks with 11 rebounds.

Lady Bucks Enjoy Taste of Victory

The Motlow Lady Bucks (2-13, 3-18) had not won since November, but Wednesday night at Copperweld Arena they led from start to finish and beat visiting Jackson St. 61-56. Watch the replay by scrolling through the menu in the video player on the Motlow Broadcasting System.

Motlow will host Columbia St. on Saturday, Feb. 20, with tipoff scheduled for 2pm. The Lady Bucks' only sophomore, point guard Natalie Collins who missed the win over Jackson St. with a hand injury, will be recognized between the women's and men's contest.

Motlow jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead against Jackson (3-12, 4-19) behind early scoring from LaDonna Bailey and Katora Fleming. After the visitors pulled to within 19-12, Motlow's Jane Barnes hit a pair of three pointers to extend the lead to 30-19 at halftime. Fleming had 12 points at the intermission, while Bailey and Barnes each had eight.

After the break the Lady Bucks came out strong and extended their lead to 40-19 with 15 minutes remaining. However, the visiting Lady Generals began to force Motlow turnovers and climb back into contention. With 32 second left the Motlow lead was only three points.

At that point seldom-used reserve Valencia Freeman stepped to the free throw line and calmly nailed a pair of free tosses to secure the victory and begin the much-deserved celebration on the home floor.

Bailey had her first double-double, recording 12 points and 12 rebounds. Fleming led the scoring for the home team with 22 points, while Barnes had 14 points and hauled down eight boards in addition to blocking five shots.

Crystal Moore came alive in the second half and finished with 11 points and six boards, and although Emily Crowl didn't get into the scoring column she did have a big impact on the game with 10 rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Lady Bucks Drop Pair

The Motlow Lady Bucks (1-13, 2-18) hope to break their losing streak when they host Jackson St. on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at Copperweld Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm and the game will be shown live on the Motlow Broadcasting System.

The Lady Bucks dropped a pair of contests last week in West Tennessee, falling 74-63 to Dyersburg St. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, and losing 66-44 to Southwest Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 13 in Memphis.

Crysal Moore led four Motlow double figure scorers against Dyersburg with 16 points while also pulling down seven rebounds. Jane Barnes had 15 points and seven rebounds along with four blocked shots. Katora Fleming added 11 points and dished out seven assists while Natalie Collins also scored 11.

Barnes led the Lady Bucks with 11 points against Southwest and added three more blocked shots. Moore led the team with four rebounds while Fleming had a team-high four steals.

Lady Bucks Come Up Just Short

The Motlow Lady Bucks (1-11, 3-15) battled hard over the weekend only to see their efforts come up short in a pair of games at Copperweld Arena.

On Friday night the Lady Bucks stayed within four points of Roane St. the entire game before falling 62-60. Saturday the Lady Bucks trailed 8th-ranked Walters St. by one point at halftime before fading in the second half and dropping a 58-34 decision.

The Lady Bucks will hope to improve their position in the TCCAA standings with a trip to Dyersburg St. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, followed by a visit to Memphis to take on Southwest Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 13. Motlow will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 17 and host Jackson St., with tipoff scheduled for 5:30pm.

Friday's battle against Roane St. was a gutsy effort by Motlow against a taller, deeper Raiderettes team. The Lady Bucks tied the score at 17-17 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half but could never take the lead.

Rebounding was the difference as Roane St. hauled down 40 boards compared to only 23 for Motlow. LaDonna Bailey led four double-figure scorers for Motlow with 15 points, including 9-12 from the foul line. Katora Fleming and Crystal Moore each added 13 points while Natalie Collins had 10. Jane Barnes pulled down a team-high nine rebounds with Moore adding six boards.

Saturday's effort was just as impressive against one of the best teams in the country. Moore led the effort with 11 points and eight rebounds while adding four steals. Fleming also scored 11 points and four steals. Poor shooting was the achilles heel for the Lady Bucks as Motlow connected on only eight of 48 shots from the field and was out-rebounded 44-22.

Homecoming Brings National Power

The Motlow Lady Bucks (1-8, 2-13) will host Roane St. on Friday, Feb. 5 and Walters St. on Saturday, Feb. 6 after their scheduled contests last weekend at Cleveland St. and Chattanooga St. were postponed due to inclement weather.

The scheduled games in Cleveland will be made up on Friday, Feb. 26, with the women scheduled to tipoff at 5pm CST. The next day, Saturday, Feb. 27, Motlow will travel to Chattanooga St. with tipoff scheduled for 1pm CST.

Lady Bucks Face the Giants

The Motlow Lady Bucks (1-9, 2-15) were out-sized at every position, and despite giving their best effort dropped a 63-37 decision to Volunteer St. (9-2, 13-4) on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Copperweld Arena.

Watch the replay here.

Motlow will now regroup and prepare for its final East Tennessee road trip, with a visit to Cleveland St. scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29, and a trip to Chattanooga St. on Saturday, Jan. 30. The Lady Bucks will return home on Friday, Feb. 5 to host Roane St., with tipoff scheduled for 6pm.

The Lady Pioneers from Vol. St. took control early Saturday and never let up, leading 30-16 at the half. The visitors shot 63% from the field while the Lady Bucks connected on only 31% of their shots. Motlow hit only 5-14 free throws and lost the rebounding battle 34-28.

Freshman forward Crystal Moore recorded a double-double for the Lady Bucks, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds while also adding four steals. Taleah Armes led Motlow in scoring with 11 points, while Katora Fleming dished out a team-high four assists.

Volunteer St. post Vee Young led the Lady Pioneers with 16 points and had seven rebounds, with Kayla West adding 11 points and Heather Miller scoring 10.

Lady Bucks Drop Two at Home

The Motlow Lady Bucks (1-8, 2-13) continued to struggle against deeper, taller teams with a pair of losses on their home floor during the past weekend. Things get no easier as the Lady Bucks will next host powerful Volunteer St. on Saturday, Jan. 23, with tipoff scheduled for 2pm.

Dyersburg St. rolled into Copperweld Arena on Friday, Jan. 15 and jumped on the Lady Bucks early, leading 28-17 with five minutes left in the half and entering the intermission ahead 32-24. To Coach Karen Serra's teams' credit they never gave up, finally taking the lead at 50-49 with 5:25 remaining on the clock. However, Dyersburg converted its free throws down the stretch to escape with a victory.

Jane Barnes had a monster double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds to help the Lady Bucks win the rebounding battle 32-22. She also registered what could be a school record seven blocked shots, although for reasons unknown that statistic is not part of official school records. Natalie Collins added 13 points, LaDonna Bailey led the way with four assists, and Crystal Moore had four steals.

Saturday's loss to Southwest Tennessee was much more disappointing for Motlow . The Lady Bucks were within five at 23-18 with 6:35 left in the half. It was then the visiting Lady Saluqis went on a 16-6 run to finish the half and entered the intermission leading 39-24. An 8-0 run to open the second half by the visitors ended any chance the Lady Bucks had to stage a comeback.

Crystal Moore and Jane Barnes unofficially led the Lady Bucks with 12 points, with Moore leading the team with with eight rebounds and Barnes seven. Emily Crowl had a strong game, coming off the bench to score 10 points and pull down four rebounds and four steals.

Short-Handed Lady Bucks Fade

The Motlow Lady Bucks (1-4, 2-8) played Wednesday night's contest against Northwest Shoals with only six players. Despite being short-handed the home team put up a valiant effort before fading in the final 10 minutes on their way to an 87-61 loss at Copperweld Arena. Watch the replay here

With four players suspended due to a violation of team rules and three other players having quit the squad during the last week, head coach Karen Serra's team faced the taller, talented visiting Lady Patriots team with only six available players.

However those six players showed a lot of heart and effort as they battled their way to a 24-22 lead with 5:30 remaining in the first half. At the intermission Motlow trailed by only one point as freshman Katora Fleming scored 15 first-half points and LaDonna Bailey added 10.

Northwest Shoals stormed to a 49-40 lead after four minutes, but the home team again fought back to trail by two at 56-54 with 11:30 remaining in the contest. At that point the Lady Bucks ran out of gas, being outscored 31-7 the rest of the way.
