Patty Johnson Wins Full Faculty Scholarship
April 28, 2011
It's off to London, England for Patty Johnson of Winchester, an associate professor of information systems at Motlow College. She has been awarded a full faculty scholarship from the Motlow College International Education Committee. Last year the Committee awarded its first full scholarships for members of Motlow's faculty to travel abroad with students. The recipients were David Bowlby, political science instructor and Lisa Mayo, instructor of Geology. Bowlby will travel to China this year.
According to Jeannie Brown, coordinator of International Education at Motlow and the director of the London trip for Tennessee Consortium for International Studies (TnCIS), "The goal in awarding faculty scholarships is to help bring international study back into the classroom through first-hand experience and possibly gain an instructor who will return to teach a class on future trips abroad."
Brown said "When we reviewed the applications and considered Patty's years of teaching experience and the rapport she has with her students, it was an obvious choice." She continued, "Although Patty will basically travel as a student this year, she will work on a proposal to teach a class abroad in information systems in the future."
Johnson said, "I am thrilled with the opportunity to travel abroad, represent Motlow and possibly teach in England in 2013. I'm very thankful for the scholarship awarded by the International Education Committee as this will be my first trip abroad!"
Traveling with Johnson and Brown will be 26 students from 19 colleges and universities. According to Brown this is a 100% increase in the number of students going and half of those are from Motlow. While there they will participate in trips to the Tower of London, Scotland Yard, Stratford-upon-Avon, Stonehenge, Bath and will also attend nine West End shows.
Another Motlow faculty member traveling with the group will be Dr. Lucy Craig, assistant professor of criminal justice. Brown said, "Dr. Craig will be participating for the first time in the study abroad program as an instructor. She will be teaching a class, "Understanding Terrorism" for the England program."
Including the London trip, a total of 21 students from Motlow will travel to eight different countries this year and all are assisted by some form of scholarship from the Motlow College International Education Committee. Five full scholarships were awarded (four Ambassadors and one Minority) and 16 students will be travel with 50% scholarships. In addition to England, the various countries they will visit include: China, Greece, India, Ireland, Scotland, Peru and Italy.
