Motlow Ladies' Philanthropic Society Seeks New Members
March 18, 2011
Charity begins at home; a statement that rings true for the Motlow Ladies' Philanthropic Society (MLPS.) Since its inception in the fall of 2009, a group of women, pooling their resources for a common goal, have helped other women realize a path of higher education is obtainable to the tune of $37,500 given in scholarships to the College.
During their Annual Spring Tea, a quarterly meeting, the women heard from the head of the membership committee, Judge Vanessa Jackson, they now boast 113 members and have raised $17,500 for scholarships this year. The ladies' goal is to help bridge a gap for women that are primarily age 23 and over who have limited resources. These women often find themselves in need of financial help to attend college.
At the Spring Tea one such recipient, Laura Trail of Manchester, addressed the group, thanking them for their generosity which in turn is helping her realize her dream. Trail, a single mother, said, "Your scholarship allowed me to take care of the expenses and lifted a large burden off me."
Trail completed the Emergency Medical Technician training at Motlow and is currently employed with Coffee County Emergency Medical Services. She is on track to graduate next spring with an associate's degree in nursing and has plans to continue her education to become a nurse practitioner and eventually obtain her doctorate. She said, "While I have these goals set, I have one other very important goal; I hope to be sitting on the other side of the podium with you one day, helping others like me."
Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of Motlow College and founder of the MLPS, urged current members to ask family members, friends and co-workers to join their group as new members directly equals new scholarship dollars. After hearing Trail's emotional speech of gratitude, Apple summarized, "Who wouldn't want to help young women like this? When we hear testimonies from scholarship recipients, we are driven to want to do more."
Motlow serves 11 counties with over 4,500 square miles and over 500,000 people. The MLPS is a nonprofit society under the umbrella of the Motlow College Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization, and all gifts to the Society are recognized as charitable deductions by the IRS. All Ladies who donate at least $100 annually to the Motlow College Foundation and specify their donation is to support women's scholarships are members of the MLPS.
